This is my mom’s homemade Thousand Island Dressing recipe and we have made it countless times over the years.  It’s made with a short list of ingredients that I like to keep on hand so I can make it on a whim. The ingredients are whisked together in a bowl so you won’t need a blender or food processor.

1000 Salad Dressing Recipe

Ready to make the best Thousand Island Dressing? Here’s the short-list of ingredients you’ll need.

  • Mayonnaise. Use a good quality mayonnaise like Best Foods or Hellman’s.
  • Chili Sauce. Be sure to use a good chili sauce (that you would use to make cocktail sauce) not an Asian chili sauce.
  • Dijon Mustard. Dijon adds a nice balance of flavor to this dressing.
  • Relish. Dill pickle relish is a classic ingredient when making 1000 Island Dressing.
  • Green Onion. We like to add minced green onion to this dressing (rather than yellow onion). It adds a nice of flavor.
  • Seasoning. Season with a little freshly ground black pepper. Add salt to taste if you like, but we don’t add salt because the chili sauce and pickle relish are salty enough.

Serving Suggestions

This Thousand Island Dressing is obviously great tossed with salad, like this Romaine SaladSpring SaladBLT Salad, Fried Chicken Salad and Chef Salad, but it’s also amazing to slather on burgers, sandwiches and wraps. Use it as a spread for   Reuben sandwiches, or try it with our Grilled Chicken Sandwich, Chopped Cheese. It’s also great to use as a dipping sauce for our Oven Roasted French Fries.
