Variations
- Add 1/2 cup fresh squeezed orange juice and 1 lemon juiced to the pitcher when combining the chai with green tea. This adds a nice hint of citrus flavor to the tea (which goes really well with the warming flavors of chai). We love to make this Chai Green Tea with the added orange and lemon juices (especially when serving it iced)!
- Add another 1-inch piece of ginger to the pan if you like a stronger ginger tasting tea.
How To Make Chai With Green Tea
- Simmer Chai Spices. Bring 8 cups of water to a boil in a saucepan and add the fresh ginger and spices to the pan. Reduce heat to a simmer and simmer for 30 minutes. Drop orange slices into the pan the last 10 minutes of simmering to add a hint of citrus to the tea.
- Simmer Green Tea. While the chai mixture is simmering, bring 4 cups of water to a simmer, then remove from heat and add the tea bags . Steep for 2-3 minutes (or longer if you want a stronger tasting tea). Remove tea bags (don’t squeeze them or your tea will taste bitter).
- Strain. Strain the chai mixture through a fine mesh sieve. Combine the green tea and strained chai in a pitcher.
- Serve. Sweeten with honey or pure maple syrup. Serve hot or cold with a slice of orange.
Can I Reuse The Spices?
Yes! You can use the reserved spices to make more tea. After you strain the chai mixture remove the ginger slices and discard. Lay the reserved spices out on a paper towel and gently pat them dry. Transfer the spices to an airtight container and refrigerate for 4-5 days or store in the freezer for up to 1 month. To reuse the spices, combine them with 4 cups of water and a 1-inch piece of ginger (peeled and sliced, chopped or grated) and simmer for 30 minutes.
I Don’t Have Fresh Ginger, Can I Used Ground Ginger?
To substitute fresh ginger with ground ginger use 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger for each 1 tablespoon fresh ginger called for in a recipe.
