Ginger Simple Syrup Ingredients

This recipe is made with just 3 simple ingredients!

  • Fresh ginger root. Ginger, also called ginger root, is one of the healthiest spices there is and it’s related to turmeric. Ginger can be used fresh (grated, chopped or juiced), dried or powdered. And it’s loaded with nutritional benefits! 
  • Pure clover honey. High quality honey is rich with nutritional perks. The darker the honey the richer the benefits.
  • Water

How to Make Ginger Syrup

This recipe comes together in about 25 minutes start-to-finish.

  1. Prepare ginger:  Peel and slice the ginger.
  2. Simmer:  Bring ginger and water to a simmer in a small saucepan.
  3. Strain:  Strain and set aside th epieces of root to use for tea later or discard them.
  4. Add honey: Allow it to cool then stir in honey 1/4 cup at a time for desired sweetness, adding more for desired thickness. It does thicken more as it cools.
  5. Refrigerate:  Pour into an air-tight container and seal lid.  Store in refrigerator.

How to Peel Ginger

You can use either a vegetable peeler or the back of a spoon to peel it.  When using a spoon, hold the root in one and and the round of a metal spoon in the other, then scrape the edge of the spoon along the root to peel away the skin.

How Long Does Ginger Syrup Last?

Store the syrup in an air-tight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.

Can You Freeze Ginger Syrup?

Pour the syrup into an ice cube tray and freeze. Once frozen, transfer to an air-tight container or freezer bag and store in the freezer for up to 6 months.

Serving Suggestions

  • Ginger water. Add 1-2 teaspoons to a glass of water and serve over ice.
  • Lemon ginger water. Stir the juice of 1/4 to 1/2 lemon with 1-2 teaspoons syrup to a glass of water and serve over ice.
  • Hot ginger tea.  Heat a cup of water and stir in 1-2 teaspoons.
  • Ginger lemon honey tea.  Heat a cup of water and stir in juice of 1/4 to 1/2 lemon and 1-2 teaspoons of ginger syrup to water.
  • Hot tea. Instead of using honey, stir in 1-2 teaspoons ginger syrup to a cup of your favorite hot tea.
  • Ginger lemonade.  Use this simple ginger syrup when making homemade lemonade.
  • Ginger Ale. Pour 1/4 cup ginger syrup and 3/4 cup sparkling water (or club soda or seltzer water).  Serve over ice.
  • Ginger smoothie.  Add a 1-2 teaspoons to the blender when blending your morning smoothie.
  • Frostings. Add to cake frosting and icing.
  • Pancakes. Drizzle over pancakes, French toast and waffles.
  • Oatmeal. Stir into oatmeal.
  • Marinades. Add to chicken marinades.

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup filtered water
  • 1 cup fresh ginger root, peeled and sliced
  • 3/4 cup clover honey

Instructions

  1. Peel ginger and cut into pieces.
  2. Bring ginger and water to a simmer in a small saucepan over medium-low heat.
  3. Simmer uncovered for 20 minutes.
  4. Strain through a sieve and reserve ginger for another use or discard.
  5. Set ginger water aside to cool for 5 minutes
  6. Add honey 1/4 cup at a time and mix with water until honey dissolves and you achieve desired sweetness.

Notes

Start out adding 1/4 cup of honey at a time to reach desired sweetness.
